“SONGBIRD is inspired by vocal choreographies and the identity of the voice”
Songbird / Music by Keliel is a performance combining contemporary choreography, practices of making music and the tools of drag. Inspired by philosopher and poet Anne Carson’s essay “The Gender of Sound”, the work reflects on the identity of the voice, the choreography of the vocal cords and the symbiosis of femininity and vulnerability.
In the performance “Songbird” confronts its audience through songs, vocal chords, lyrics, costumes and contemporary dance. How does the choreography of the vocal cords spread through the space? What do the different pitches, frequencies and modes of expression cause in the spectator? How do music performance and corporeality meet?
The work is performed by dancer, choreographer and drag artist Tiia Kasurinen, sharing the stage with the sound designer and composer Keliel/Eliel Tammiharju. The working group consists of Nordic artists: Tiia Kasurinen (concept, choreography, performance, Finland), Eliel Tammiharju (sound design, performance, Finland), Maria Tórgarð (dramaturgical help, direction, Faroe Islands), Sofia Linde (light design, Sweden) and Frederik Taus (costume design, Denmark). The target audience of the piece are adults and young adults.

Songbird / Music by Keliel on esitystaideteos, joka yhdistää nykykoreografiaa, musiikin tekemisen praktiikoita ja drag-taiteen työkaluja. Filosofi ja runoilija Anne Carsonin esseestä “The Gender of Sound” inspiroitunut esitys tarkastelee äänen identiteettiä, äänihuulten koreografiaa sekä feminiinisyyden ja haavoittuvaisuuden symbioosia.
Esityksessä “Songbird” kohtaa yleisönsä kappaleiden, äänihuulten, lyriikoiden, puvustuksen ja tanssin keinoin. Miten äänihuulten koreografia levittyy tilaan? Miten eri taajuudet, sävelkorkeudet ja ilmaisun tavat aiheuttavat kokijassa? Miten eri musiikin esittäminen ja kehollisuus kohtaavat?
Teoksessa esiintyy tanssija, koreografi ja drag-taiteilija Tiia Kasurinen sekä äänisuunnittelija ja säveltäjä Keliel/Eliel Tammiharju. Teoksen viisihenkisessä, kansainvälisessä työryhmässä työskentelee Pohjoismaisia taiteilijoita: Tiia Kasurinen (konsepti, koreografia, esitys, Suomi), Eliel Tammiharju (äänisuunnittelu, esitys, Suomi), Maria Tórgarð (dramaturginen apu ja ohjaus, Färsaaret), Sofia Linde (valosuunnittelu, Ruotsi) sekä Frederik Taus (pukusuunnittelu, Tanska). Teoksen kohderyhmää ovat nuoret aikuiset ja aikuiset.
