SONGBIRD is a performance combining contemporary choreography, practices of performing music and the tools of camp-aesthetics and drag. Inspired by the philosopher and poet Anne Carson’s essay “The Gender of Sound”, the performance reflects on the identity of voice, choreographies of the vocal cords, femininity and vulnerability.
In the performance, “Songbird” meets her audience through sounds, songs, vocal cords, lyrics, costuming and dance. How do choreographies of vocal cords spread through space? What do pitches, frequencies and modes of expression cause in the spectator? How do sounding and corporeality meet?
The work is performed by dancer, choreographer and artist Tiia Kasurinen and the sound designer and composer Keliel/Eliel Tammiharju. The working group consists of Nordic artists: Tiia Kasurinen (concept, choreography, performance, Finland), Sofia Linde (light design, Sweden), Eliel Tammiharju (sound design, performance, Finland), and Freyja Taus (costume design, Denmark). The target audience of the piece are adults and young adults.

Tiia Kasurinen (she/her) is an artist, dancer and choreographer working both internationally and in Finland, and graduated from the Stockholm University of the Arts. She is interested in themes such as identity, femininity, gaze, power, camp and pop culture. Kasurinen’s choreographic works have been presented at venues and festivals such as Dansé Elargie in France, One Dance -festival in Bulgaria, Inkonst in Sweden, Dance Base Yokohama in Japan, Helsinki Festival, and at Zodiak – Centre for New Dance.

“SONGBIRD inspiroituu äänihuulten koreografoista sekä äänen identiteetistä”
SONGBIRD on esitystaideteos, joka yhdistää nykykoreografiaa, musiikin esittämisen praktiikoita sekä dragin ja camp-estetiikan työkaluja. Filosofi ja runoilija Anne Carsonin esseestä “The Gender of Sound” inspiroitunut esitys tutkii äänen identiteettiä, äänihuulten koreografioita, feminiinisyyttä ja haavoittuvaisuutta.
Esityksessä “Songbird” kohtaa yleisönsä äänten, laulun, äänihuulten, lyriikoiden, puvustuksen ja tanssin keinoin. Miten äänihuulten koreografia levittyy tilaan? Mitä taajuudet, sävelkorkeudet ja ilmaisun tavat herättävät katsojassaan? Miten äänen käyttäminen ja kehollisuus kohtaavat?
Teoksessa esiintyvät tanssija, koreografi ja taiteilija Tiia Kasurinen sekä äänisuunnittelija ja säveltäjä Keliel/Eliel Tammiharju. Teoksen kansainvälisessä työryhmässä työskentelee neljä Pohjoismaista taiteilijaa: Tiia Kasurinen (ohjaus, koreografia, esitys, Suomi), Eliel Tammiharju (äänisuunnittelu, esitys, Suomi), Sofia Linde (valosuunnittelu, Ruotsi) sekä Freyja Taus (pukusuunnittelu, Tanska). Teoksen kohderyhmä ovat aikuiset sekä nuoret aikuiset.

BIO Tiia Kasurinen (she/her) on kansainvälisesti ja Suomessa työskentelevä taiteilija, tanssija ja koreografi, joka on valmistunut Tukholman Taideyliopistosta. Hänen teoksensa inspiroituvat identiteetin, feminiinisyyden, katseen, vallan, campin ja pop-kulttuurin teemoista. Kasurisen koreografisia teoksia on näytetty mm. Dansé Elargiessa Ranskassa, One Dance – Festivaaleilla Bulgariassa, Inkonst-teatterissa Ruotsissa, Dance Base Yokohamassa Japanissa, Helsingin Juhlaviikoilla/Tanssin Talossa sekä Zodiak – Uuden Tanssin Keskuksessa.
